Finance the Common Good: Activating Strategies of Responsible Investing
2019 Feast of St. Francis Lecture at King's College
"Financing the Common Good: Activating Strategies of Responsible Investing"
On Thursday, October 17, 7:00 p.m., in the McGowan School of Business, Burke Auditorium, speaker Mary Beth Gallagher, executive director of the Tri-State Coalition for Responsible Investment, outside New York, will inform participants about the field of socially responsible investing in the context of the broader investment community, and how shareholders in our coalition use their voice as owners in corporations to advocate for climate justice, racial equity, respect for human rights, the rights of immigrant communities, and an end to forced labor and child labor. She will share examples of recent shareholder engagements that our coalition of institutional investors has led with multinational companies, for example with car companies on forced labor and child labor in cobalt and mica sourcing, with Amazon to stop sales of facial recognition surveillance technology to governments, for Hershey to adopt a Human Rights Policy to address child labor in the cocoa industry, and JP Morgan Chase to end financing of private prisons where immigrants are detained in terrible conditions. We grapple with the role of ethics and values in business and finance, and how, as responsible investors who believe in an equitable economy that advances social, economic and environmental justice, we can seek collaboration with community partners and use our voices in pragmatic and productive ways that can reduce risks to vulnerable people and the planet.
